OUR MISSION

Our mission is to uncover
the money, energy demands,
policies and infrastructure
buildouts driving artificial
intelligence’s expansion —
and reveal how they affect
communities, the environment
and our democratic future.

JAYNE LYTEL Editor in Chief
WHAT WE STAND FOR
The four principles that govern every investigation we publish.

EDITORIAL INDEPENDENCE

We accept no funding from AI companies, cloud providers, or their investors. Our reporting answers to readers, not sponsors.

EVIDENCE-BASED REPORTING

Every claim is backed by public records, leaked documents, utility filings, or on-the-record sources — never speculation.

FOLLOW THE MONEY

We trace capital, subsidies, and contracts to show who profits from AI expansion — and who absorbs the cost.

PUBLIC ACCOUNTABILITY

Our data and methodology are open. Journalists, regulators, and communities can verify and build on our work.

  • Who We Cover

Pipeline operators, data center developers, utilities, state and federal regulators and the agencies that grant their permits — alongside the landowners, ratepayers and communities absorbing the cost.

  • How We Use AI Agents

A human editor-in-chief stays in charge from start to finish. The editor gives an assignment to an AI team lead, which coordinates a group of specialized AI assistants. These assistants help plan the research, gather records, analyze the information, challenge and fact-check each claim, build the final product from verified facts, and draft the story. The human approves the sources before the research begins, reviews and edits the work afterward, and remains the only person who can authorize publication.

  • Corrections & Accuracy

We correct errors when we find them or when a reader brings them to our attention. If information or data is incorrect, we publish a dated correction explaining what was wrong and how we corrected it. See Corrections in the footer to read them.

  • Funding & Independence

The Big Drop is supported by founder and Editor in Chief Jayne Lytel, with additional support from readers. Even $5 helps. More important, sharing our work helps grow attention around this critical topic. No funder, advertiser, or sponsor reviews coverage before publication.
